"Generally photographs tell the story or the situation of particular places. It shows or tells the happy, sad or weird moment. Sometimes things go crazy and we cannot control our minds out of troubles; therefore, photographs can possibly enrich our life or possibly change the world."
Looking In
Rattana believes photography can create positive change for Cambodia. Although his VAO images come from his first rolls of film, they establish a confident and ambitious track. Each image captures a simplicity by observing the use of interior spaces in Cambodia today. Both color and white photographs rest in household frames, creating an installation that deliberately challenges stereotypes of what is beautiful and worthy, what is new and old. Whether in his own home or visiting another's space, he shares with us intimate moments and details that resemble cinematic stills. Rattana's images make a valuable record of everyday life for this developing country whose identity oscillates evermore between representations of romanticized poverty and wealth.
